It's hard to talk about flipping without mentioning pitching. It seems as if you do one, you almost invariably do the other!

You may feel a little self conscious using these techniques when everyone is casting something like a mile into the water but anyone who knows anything about fishing will know what you're doing and appreciate your efforts.
If you ask WHY you ought to know this, it's simple. This is a good technique for any BIG fish like carp or bass that may suspend close to shore or cover and you don't want to spook the fish. It will allow you to softly place your bait, with precision, right in front of its nose!

It you look closely at the video, you'll notice that Tim is using a baitcasting reel but, it works just as well with a spinning outfit. The main thing to remember is that it works BEST with a rod that is around 7 feet or longer and your best bet is probably a medium heavy rod. Personally, I like a 6 foot rod but, like I always say, fishing is full of compromises!
If you fish for catfish using chicken liver but go crazy because the livers tear up and don't stay hooked during casts, this is a technique to combat that problem!
