A family in the Anglers' Corner
January 28th 2008 04:30
The old saying "The family that plays together, stays together" really applies to the Mize family. Not only do you find Mom and Dad, Lucy and Jimmy, on the professional tour, their children, Melinda and Matt also followed their steps and entered the cast for cash circuit.
There's an obvious question here. Have they competed against each other? Certainly. Although, you'd have to think it makes for "interesting" conversation at the dinner table!
Daughter Melinda, who I've mentioned before may be getting most of the press these days because of her marriage and National Guard Service but everyone has a mother and father and she even has a brother who can offer advice and stories about the tournament trail.

When it comes to Jimmy Mize, there's always going to be some wise guy saying, "Who?" because Jimmy has yet to win a major tournament. My reply to that is, "Give the guy a break!" I include him among the greats because his second place finishes warrant notice and, on a personal level, I think his versatility creates an explosion waiting to happen. His name may never be listed with the Kevin Van Dams of the fishing world but his presence is enough to make all competitors uneasy when he's within striking distance.
What about Mom? Don't forget this Lucy! If being a wife and mother aren't time consuming enough Lucy has been named the Womens' Bass Fishing Association's top angler of the year and is generally leading the way for all women to enter into competition arenas with men.

2007 was the first year in tournament competition for Matt Mize. He's already got a couple of Top-50 finishes under his belt and finished in the money at a tournament. At this stage of the game, one can only surmise that there's a lot of fishing in his future. Considering his lineage, it will be interesting to watch as his career develops.

Here's a video of Melinda and her mom. I wish it was around the first time I wrote about Melinda.
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
