More pros in the Anglers' Corner
February 11th 2008 05:29
Since it's February and tournament action begins in less than two weeks, there are some more professionals I want to profile before the competition begins. Of course, every year there's some Cinderella Kid who comes out of nowhere and garners all the attention the sport has to offer! With my luck, that will happen again this year and all the people I've mentioned on here won't even finish in the Top-50!
Dean Rojas is an angler we could ALL learn from! One of his primary strengths is sight fishing which is simply watching shallow swimming fish and then observing as they come up and take the bait. I LOVE doing that and I think it's an easy way to learn about fish species and what you do to affect the bite.
Since entering his first BASS tournament in 1998, he's entered over 100 tournaments which includes two out right victories, finishing "in the money" 73 times, and 6 Bassmater Classic appearances.
Davey Hite is another angler I really respect. He entered his first BASS competition back in 1989. Since that time he's taken the title in 7 tournaments, collected over $1 million in prize money, fished in a dozen Bassmaster Classics with a victory there, and was named Bass Angler of the Year in 1997 and 2002.
Ironically, according to Bassfan.com Hite is only ranked 64th in the world. I have trouble accepting that but I know they base their rankings on many factors including (a biggie) what a person has done lately. In 2007 Hite's best finish was 5th so, I'm certain that says a lot! None the less, I'd be happy just to carry his bait bucket!
Four is a good number for Aaron Martens. That's his current world rank and also the number of tournaments he's won on the BASS tour since entering BASS events starting in 1998. All told, he's entered over 100 tournaments and finished in the money 82 times.
Oddly enough, although Martens has achieved fame and fortune on the BASS tour, it was trout, not bass, that first attracted this 2005 Angler of the Year to fishing!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
