Don't be too proud to ask questions!

July 25th 2010 13:44
Any time outdoor activities are on tap, to get the most enjoyment, you have to know what you're doing. That goes for fishing, hunting, bird watching, hiking...you get the idea.
fishing, fog

If you've watched any hunting or fishing programs on TV, you've probably noticed the host mentioning his guide. No matter how much you may know about an activity, local insight is imperative! This is where the guide earns his money.

Most of us may not venture out of the country or even out of the state but local knowledge is still important. That point is driven home to me every time I remember all the time I've wasted fishing with minnows when the fish prefer worms and vice versa!

Although I'm fairly well versed when it comes to fishing Lake Erie, when I went to Presque Isle State Park for some hiking, I went right to the Park Office and asked them which trail to take. The local knowledge was invaluable with statements like, "This trail goes by a factory," or "This path goes by a lighthouse," coupled with a map of the park.

I'll give you another take on this--a little humility can make it look like you know what you're doing!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

I've become a question guy. When I scope out a place I always say, "What are you catching?" and "What bait are you using"? People think I'm being social but, I'm collecting information.

They don't use it much over here but, I personify the expression "Cheeky devil!"

Know anything about fishing in the Washington State, Olympic Peninsula? I'm headed up this week. What is a drift and sled in fishing boats?
