Angling Fish - by James Rickard

Making barbless hooks

August 22nd 2008 01:43
When you catch a fish with a ripped up lip you know they must not feel pain or, at least, they're not too smart because, surely, they wouldn't be biting on anything that causes pain.

Anyway, those ripped up lips don't have to be if you use a barbless hook.

You have to shop around a little to find barbless hooks but it's not hard to make you own.

All you have to do is take an average hook, any brand will do, and bend over or break the barb which will make it easy to pull out of a fish, make catch and release easier, and help insure the fish's well being.

It's easy to remove the barb from a hook. All you have to do is take a suitable pair of pliers and squeeze down on the barb. Depending on the size of the hook, you may have to grind it down rather than bending it. No matter what method you have to employ, it's fairly easy and it's something you can do while watching TV.

8/0 Hooks
The hook on the left has had the barb removed. On the right is a hook with the barb intact.

Some people worry about losing fish because the hooks have no barbs. If you keep a fairly tight line after hooking up, (which you should) you won't have much to worry about!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

About to go through the old man's fishing 'arsenal' - think I might head out and pick up a few - just to try em out.

Tight lines . . .

Mr Nice Guy,

If you catch a reddie, think of me. The perch in the States are nothing like you have!!!!!

It sure does make it easier to get the hook out of a fish, or even a finger!

The barbless revolution is on!

My first emergency room visit for a hook through the finger happened at age 10.

That would have been a much less traumatic night had it been a barbless hook.

When fishing with kids, barbless is the ONLY option.
