Bass fishing anyone?

Sometimes it's hard to write about things things that are close to you. That's part of the reason I've resisted the temptation to write about bass fishing and then you get into the fragmented divisions of bass fishing and you almost have to address each group to offer any assistance. Although there are general guidelines pertaining to all bass, it's going to be a little different in the spring than in the fall and river fishing will differ from lake fishing.

None the less, if you want to pursue what has become the most popular game fish in North America, this is the place to get started.

Assuming you have a rod and know where to fish, your reel should be spooled with line varying 6-10 lb. test. I use a slightly heavier 12lb. for most of my river fishing because of a snagging problem. I've found an area that's good for catfish and that's fairly clean so, I use 8lb. there.

LURES For lures, I try to keep it simple. Despite what you read, artificial lures are a very regional thing. What works in one area may not work in another! Despite this, a good rule of thumb (I've said a million times) is to use light lures in the day and dark lures at night. I don't buy (much) in to the theory of lure color influencing the bite. I think the action of the lure and your retrieve are the main attributes to getting fish on the line!

That being said, there are three important lures to have for bass fishing--a crankbait, spinners, and a topwater. You may wonder if there are only three lures, why anglers have so many lures. First of all, many lures are designed to catch more anglers than fish! An appealing color pattern may go unnoticed by fish but look really good in the store. Also, these three lures have a universal application to all fish. The size or color (there, I said it!) may be tweaked but they can work for several species.

Artificial worms are a proven bass-getter. The nice thing is they are cheap! It's a good thing they are so cheap because there are so many on the market that you may end up buying several before you find the style that suits your fishing.

LIVE BAIT Live bait is always good for any kind of fishing. Bass eat just about anything (including smaller bass) at one time or another but your best bet will be to go with minnows or night crawlers. Grubs, crawdads, or crickets may work but bait like that is getting a little more specific.

Younger bass that haven't wised up yet are fairly easy to catch. These can vary from only a few inches and far less than a pound to the current record, 1932's catch weighing in at 10 kg (22¼ lb). In 2006 a large mouth weighing slightly over 25 pounds was caught in California but it was never recorded as "the biggest" by the International Game Fishing Association because the fish was foul hooked.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
