How to use a bottom bouncer

March 5th 2010 01:51
Here's a really good video illustrating a bottom bouncer--a great way to fish the bottom while on the move and not get snagged.

bottom bouncer
In all its simplicity, this is a bottom bouncer. The picture was cropped as tightly as possible to conserve space. There is usually as much wire below the sinker as there is on top.

One of the best descriptions of a bottom bounce is a sinker on a wire. Some guys like to tie on an artificial lure. Others use a hook and live bait. At any rate, they allow you to get down deep and then, with just a little speed, fish only a few inches from the bottom.

Often weighted from ½ to 4 ounces or greater, the bottom bouncer is an inverted “L” shaped wire with a lead weight molded about half way down its length. The other arm, the shorter part of the “L”, usually has a snap swivel at the end to attach a leader. At the junction of where the two arms intersect is a spot for you to attach your main line.

Often associated with walleye fishermen, a bottom bouncer can easily be used for any application where an angler needs to get their bait to the bottom without getting hung up. You can use it when trolling or even fishing from the bank.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

I would certainly not ever want to engage in such a practice, just what is your angle? young man.

They're actually safe. Unlike a lot of tackle, a few seasons go by before you lose it!
