Buck Tails and Hair Jigs
February 17th 2009 01:19
Hair jigs, some say buck tail jigs, have been around a long time and will be use for generations to come for one simple reason--they catch fish. No matter what you call them, they equate to the same thing.
This is the oldest jig I own. As you can tell, it's seen its better days. The hook must be made from super strong alloy because it only needs sharpened once or twice a year!
Bucktails got their name back in the day when actual deer hair was used. Now days, the majority of lures you find will incorporate some type of synthetic fibers.
When it comes to bucktails, I usually think of a lure like the one at the top. The bottom jig is much smaller but you can dress it up with a trailer.
Conventional wisdom says to skip your jig along the bottom of the water you're fishing. I usually agree with that except in the case of the white jig above. A jig like that will resemble a bait fish to a predator so it may pay to glide it through the water a bit. On the other hand, you can pump it along the bottom or through the water to mimic a wounded bait fish. Also, fish aren't stupid so, if the water is fairly clear, a jerking motion may get their attention no matter what kind of jig you use.
Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!
