The advantages of ceramic bearings

Ceramic bearing have been around for a while so, seeing them is fishing reels is not a big deal.
What is a big deal is usually the price of the reel. So, the thing you have to ask yourself is, "Are they worth it?"
Where bearings are concerned, any bearing is going to reduce friction where metal parts move against another surface. Ceramic bearings stand head and shoulders above regular steel bearings for several reasons. First of all, the useful life of ceramic bearings is far and away MUCH longer than steel common bearings. Additionally, they require less lubrication.
However, where fishing reels are concerned, the chief advantage is that ceramic bearings are very resistant to corrosion. That may not mean a whole lot if you're going down to the creek and catching your limit of trout but if you're around saltwater the bearing material makes a difference.
Conventional wisdom would make things simple and put ceramic bearings in all fishing reels. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Several of the low end reels have no bearings in them. On the other hand, if ceramic bearings are available for a reel,It's not uncommon to spend 30 bucks or more for an upgrade so, you have to ask yourself if it's worth fooling with.
