Change last year's hooks

Chances are a lot of your lures sat around and rusted over the winter.
Rusty hooks can be an angler's worst enemy. Not only are they dull but getting stuck by a rusty hook is worse than getting stuck by a new hook because the rust is a quicker route for infection.
I've talked about sharpening hooks before but, it may be a lot easier to simply swap out the old hooks with new ones.
Whether you sharpen a hook or replace it is often a matter of choice but here are some useful suggestions.
First and foremost, don't try to be creative or make a "super-lure." Stick with what's there and replace the hook with a replacement as close to the original as possible. By using similar hooks you won't have to worry about changing the lure's action i.e. wobble or floating properties.

That being said, you can easily replace the hooks on any lure. Some lures come with spring rings attached to the hook holder (where the hook is mounted.) If not, you can still cut the old hook and replace it with a new one using spring rings. You don't have to worry about looking like a cheapskate if you do this because several lures out there already employ spring rings you're definitely going to save a few bucks by replacing just the hooks instead of buying a whole new lure.
You can buy a couple dozen hooks for the cost of a single lure so, give it a shot!

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!
