Weekend tip--Get fishing equipment cheap
December 1st 2007 00:12
Fishing can be an inexpensive past time. That is--compared to some other outdoor hobbies you may have. Hunting, camping, boating-- you name it--it's gonna run a few bucks. After you get a rod and reel, you can get a little tackle and be on your way! That's part of the trouble. You can spend five or ten bucks here and then another five or ten some place else and before you know it, you've spent your weekly allowance!
So--where can you get fishing stuff cheap? Sometimes it's easier than you think!
Or course, you can always wait until fishing season starts and pick up what you need at those pre-season sales. But, what if you want something NOW?
Right now, in the States, a lot of areas are thinking more about hunting than fishing so those guys behind the counter may be more than glad to get rid of ANY fishing equipment--even if it's only a pack of hooks! It's not just the Mom & Pop stores either. You never know what the big box stores are going to do. It never hurts to ask the floor or department manager.
One avenue that may work is checking out yard sales, auctions, and flea markets. It may be a waste of time but, it can be more than a little profitable. If nothing else, you may find some other neat things at the sales!
Ebay can be another store that's as close as your computer. I really can't discount the buys you can find on almost ANYTHING but, I always warn people to be wary of anything used (especially rods). I've both sold and purchased on Ebay so, I know where I'm coming from when I say, "Watch yourself!" The biggest thing I point out is that you have to figure the shipping and cost of the item when determining what the item is truly costing you and then figure what a similar item would cost if you paid retail some place closer to home. This sounds like common sense but, you'd be surprised!
Let me finish up by saying that if you shop carefully in the off season, you'll have everything you need when the season starts again!

You really know what I'm talking about then. So far this year, since it's cooled down, I've been able to pick up a couple of BIG name lures, some hooks, a rod and nearly a mile of line. The thing I've learned (even since this post) is to set a price limit. My guide line is that I'm not going to pay over a dollar for a package of hook or three dollars for a lure. After that, 15 bucks for a decent rod didn't seem so bad! Maybe I'm getting old but, I really enjoy checking out flea markets and such!
