How to choose fishing line

If you're new to fishing or anything for that matter, you want the best out there but with so many fishing lines on the market, you have to wonder which one is right. That's always tough to answer since specifics have to be considered but, this chart may help:
Panfish...............2-4 lb. test
Rainbow Trout....6-10 lb. test
Brook Trout..........2-6 lb. test
Small Lake Trout..6-10 lb. test
Large Lake Trout..10-30 lb. test
Smallmouth Bass..6-8 lb. test
Walleye..................6-8 lb. test (usually)
Pike or Muskie.......14-20 lb. test
Chinook Salmon.....17-30 lb. test
Coho Salmon..........10-14 lb. test
Panfish...............2-4 lb. test
Rainbow Trout....6-10 lb. test
Brook Trout..........2-6 lb. test
Small Lake Trout..6-10 lb. test
Large Lake Trout..10-30 lb. test
Smallmouth Bass..6-8 lb. test
Pike or Muskie.......14-20 lb. test
Chinook Salmon.....17-30 lb. test
Coho Salmon..........10-14 lb. test
Although this chart is a good beginning point, after you know what you're doing, there are factors other than just weight to consider when choosing line. It's always a good move to use the lightest line you can get away with but rocks, logs, or stumps necessitate heavier line. Conversely, you may consider lighter line when fishing on a very clear day because it will be harder for the fish to see a thinner line.
Matching rod, reel, line, and lures is a balancing act full of trade-offs and every experienced angler will have his or her idea as to the best. If you're just starting out, it's best to go with manufacturer's recommendations. After a while, you can make your own decisions and become and "experienced angler."

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
