The end of the line??

August 25th 2011 20:18
Admittedly, the question marks were added by yours truly. Discounting this liberty, The End of the Line is a film which takes a sobering look at the effects of overfishing and offers solutions that may save our population.

The Rupert Murray film, based on British environmental journalist Charles Clover's book, shows the devastating effects that overfishing with modern technology is having on our oceans by using both under and above-water footage to show we are taking fish from the ocean faster than they can be replaced.

Although there is a definite bias, the documentary can still be a wake up call to problems people may not be aware of. For instance, according to the film, 50% of the cod harvested annually is illegal, how fish supplies can be down while national catches are up, and problems caused by trolling nets are observed.

As vast as the world's oceans are, it's hard to imagine we are slowly depleting fish supplies. Yet, in 90 sobering minutes the travesty of Man can be observed.

This post is related to what I was talking about yesterday.

Worries about the illegal trade of shark fins and sea cucumbers has resulted in banning the trade of both products in the Marshall islands.

Notice a lack of fins?

Although it goes against centuries of tradition and will, undoubtedly infuriate countless people, the U.S. state of California is introducing a bill to ban the sale and possession of shark fins, including the serving of shark’s fin soup.

This great shot and other photographs by Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert can be seen by following a link within today's post.

It's no secret that I'm not a fan of shark fin soup although I've never had the opportunity to try it.

The gray areas of life and fishing

January 7th 2011 03:38
Looking for facts to back up my theories, has taught me one thing--when it comes to angling, there are a LOT of opinions floating around out there. That idea was driven home when I ran across this article when I was, as is often the case, looking for other information.

Although the article mentions a debate raging among shark harvesters, the real message is that, too often, policy aimed at fisheries, is determined by, at the best, tainted information because proper studies may not be conducted.

Part of Gulf closed to shrimping

November 28th 2010 01:32
Some would say it's an example of damage control, closing the barn door after the horse gets out or, even what should have been done earlier.

What ever way you want to look at it, part of the gulf of Mexico had been closed to commercial shrimping after tar balls were discovered. This action comes after the waters were deemed "safe" be the federal government. This action reverses that decision and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has closed over4,000 square miles of the Gulf off Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

I mentioned the BP fallout yesterday and it's worse than I thought.

Since I had some time to kill, I was surfing around and found a link to this report.

More BP fallout

November 26th 2010 00:46
Will we ever hear the end of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

Although the spill itself was capped weeks ago there is still dispute. For instance, federal officials have pronounce seafood from the Gulf safe for human consumption. However, residents and experts dispute that claim.

The good and bad of conservation

There's a lot of difference between guys who throw a hook into the water and guys who make a living casting giant nets into the water and measuring success by the ton!

Here's a really good article I found about a commercial fisherman in Great Britain who finally had to hang it up because of government regulations and conservation measures.

Saltwater fish numbers decline

Where did all the fish go?

It should come as no surprise that the number of saltwater fishes is declining. The eye opener is that species not targeted by fishermen are also being reduced.
