Seasick fish?

May 12th 2009 00:33
Life is full of oxymorons--liberal republican--military intelligence--you probably know a few more. Think it's a oxymoron if fish get seasick? It's certainly ironic!

Studies have shown that fish can exhibit signs of "seasickness" .

More accurately, fish were being studied to, perhaps, link their medical problems to human experiences during weightless in space.

An aquarium of 49 fish went aloft in an airplane that went into a steep dive to simulate the weightlessness experienced in space. (no wonder they call it the "Vomit Comet")

Eight of the forty nine got a little "loopy" from the trip, lost their coordination, and began turning around and around in circles.

If this was nature in the raw, injured fish like this would have been prey for larger fish so, it's somewhat fitting that these eight were sacrificed in the name of Science and their brains examined to determine the exact cause of their ills.

Unfortunately, it's unclear why this experiment was conducted on fish. I think the laboratory had some grant money they had to spend so they chose something fun and easy. Remember when you were a kid and tortured animals just to see what would happen?

Since fish have a much more primitive nervous system than humans, I have to wonder about the practicality of this study. Fish??? How will those findings be equated to humans? Maybe it's just me but I always thought it was something like rats, monkeys, and then humans.

Just so you don't think I'm making this up, here's the original article.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!

Giant stingrays

South Eastern Asia must be a haven for big, exotic fish. Not only are giant catfish found, scientist have even found giant sting rays.

Can fish hear?

Remember when you were a little kid, jabbering away as Grandpa was trying to wet a line?

"Shhhh. You'll scare the fish," he finally said in an exasperated tone.

New species discovered

December 20th 2007 05:25
While checking the National Geographic Site, I saw that biologists have discovered 57 new varieties of freshwater fish in Europe which would bring the total of known European species to 522. Many more undescribed fish are suspected to exist which would bring the total to 600 or more. The new species were discovered during a seven year study by the World Conservation Union (ICUN.)

57 varieties found in Europe. Think about that for a moment. Here are new species found in an area which we thought was well explored. The fish were found in what we call the “civilized world.” If new species were found on the ocean floor, I could understand it. But, in civilized Europe??? These findings have to make us question what we know and don’t know. Further, these discoveries put the probability of the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman, and Bigfoot in a whole new light.

I'm not trying to be gross or offend anyone with this video. This is the ugly side of nature. You know what they say--"Only the strong survive."
