River Monsters Preview

March 27th 2011 01:45
This was on my YouTube channel the other day and I thought you may be interested.

If you watch the video, I'm looking forward to seeing what brought down the horses crossing the river. Knowing the program, common wisdom would say bull shark but I'm hoping for something else.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

English Nessie?

March 22nd 2011 02:57
Like I've admitted on here, I'm kind of into mysteries.

Big Foot, crop circles, Stonehenge--point me in the right direction and I'm on it like stink on a monkey!

When I ran across this story on the National Geographic site, it had a familiar ring to it.

I performed an Orble search, and finally came up with the answer.

Here's a pretty neat story I ran across the other day.

An angler in Wisconsin hauled in an albino musky.

Web-footed shark found

shark feet
I ran across this account of a web-footed shark discovered in Malaysia.

Normally, I wouldn't say much about it and probably pass on the article. But, things are so screwed up these days that this may be some sort of evolutionary freak we'll start seeing more and more.

70 year old lands record halibut

December 20th 2010 00:39
Here's a story about a 70 year old angler from Germany who landed a halibut so big it can provide enough meat for almost 1000 fish dinners!

halibut
In the article, a German angler catches a fish in Iceland. Doesn't that show the international spirit of angling? Also, I think this is an example of real people. After all, it's not some "he-man" story where the guy and his mate pulled a monster fish onto the boat. The reality of needing the help of five crew members is mentioned in the article.

New fish found

December 17th 2010 16:03
With animal species disappearing every day, it's uplifting when you hear about the discovery of a new species.

That's what has happened in Japan except the discovery was a fish long thought extinct.

A little on the spoon bill catfish

October 21st 2010 03:40
North America's answer to the swordfish would have to be the spoonbill catfish, also known as the "paddle fish."

Once common in many parts of America and even into Canada, overfishing and habitat changes have caused major population declines. Happily, paddlefish were redcently spotted in Europe's Danube river. However, It hasn't been determined if the fish escaped from fish farms during European floods, or whether they were let into the river earlier and matured there.

Beware of 'Crocs and Gators!

September 21st 2010 15:00
Regular readers are going to know that I'm far from a "Wild Kingdom" sort of guy but, I have an appetite for the outdoors. With that appetite comes a healthy respect for animals with the ability to devour victims despite the fact I have little to fear from them.

Although I don't worry about running into them, two nasty creatures that quickly come to mind are crocodiles and alligators.

Here's why fish don't freeze in the Arctic

September 14th 2010 01:08

Have you ever wondered why fish in the Arctic Ocean don't freeze when the surrounding air temperature is around freezing while the water is below freezing and is only liquid because of its saltiness?

So did I.

Flying carp ruin a race in Kansas

September 7th 2010 15:41
Maybe the fact I've never really seen anything but filmed news stories on silver carp leads to my fascination with the menace.

None-the-less, here's a report from the UK about a kayaker in the US who had to drop out of a race after he was hit in the head by one of the leaping monsters.

Watch out for snapping turtles!

August 31st 2010 01:32
Although many people like turtle soup, as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing worse that catching a turtle!

One thing you have to be careful about is the fact that some turtles are more aggressive than others and around here that honor goes to the snapping turtle.

Let's throw one more into the mix and talk about the Nile Perch.

When I began thinking about the dangers that lurk at the water's edge, I never put black snakes into the mix.

Around here, and all of North America for that matter, black snakes are harmless. On the other hand, if you live in Australia and see a black snake, watch out!!!

Another danger--water mocassins!

cottonmouth, water moccasin, water snake
If you live in the Southeastern region of the U.S., you may run across water moccasins. Also called swamp moccasin, black moccasin, viper, or cottonmouth, these snakes are around a yard long and 1.5-3 inches in diameter--much like their relative, the copperhead.

Although the majority of water moccasins are almost totally black, the color pattern may vary and they may have banding coloration as you can see from the photo at the right.

A danger of fishing--Copperhead

July 19th 2010 09:35
You seldom think of fishing as a dangerous activity unless you're going after sharks or whaling. However, when it's hot like it has been around here, fishing is often done in the morning or in the evening. If that's the case, the same weather that is bringing you to the water's edge, may bring several other creatures out of the their lair, also. Aside from that, the same river, lake, or pond may be the only water source some scary animals know.

Rather than coming up with one HUGH text-book length article, I want to devote separate posts to various creatures you may run into when going down to the local water hole.

Flying carp on TV

July 18th 2010 21:52
Although I deserve a big paycheck for this plug, I will mention that National Geographic Television is having a program tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern on Asian Carp.

Flying carp have been a problem in the Mississippi River for some time and looks to be getting worse.
