Cures for cabin fever
January 11th 2008 02:15
When the forecast calls for temperatures the 20's and wind chills around 20 mph, chances are you'd rather stay in the warm confines of your home than be out on the water.
So what do you do to scratch that fishing itch? You can only wipe down your boat so many times. (providing you have a boat) All your reels have been re-spooled, you’ve gone through all your tackle, sharpened hooks, checked and re-checked everything on the boat AND the trailer. In fact you've done anything you can think of to be ready for the water and it’s still a LONG time until before you can fish.
You have a case of cabin fever like you’ve never experienced. Just like a junkie, you need that “fix” before you start climbing the walls!
To tie you over, try finding an outdoor show or a boat show in a major city close by. Every year there are shows at a large convention centers where manufacturers get a chance to show off their goods and try and drum up a lot of good PR. I’m not opposed the occasional stroll through the big boat showcases but I really like the tackle booths at outdoor shows.
Sometimes, the super stores will have in-store shows with representatives on hand to answer questions and give tips on how to use a product successfully. You may also get to meet one of the outdoorsy guys you watch every week on TV! AND don’t worry about being “too cool!” Take your camera and a piece of paper for pictures for an autograph because plenty of other people do it!!!!
I really recommend something like this for beginning anglers to explore the world of fishing. You can see a lot of equipment in one place, meet company representatives and see what’s out there. The one thing I can’t say is whether or not to take your credit card. Sometimes, the equipment may be at great prices that are too good to pass up. Other times, even if the company reps are there, things are at regular prices and it may pay to shop around.
The beginning fisherman or a seasoned vet can usually find something that strikes their interest at the shows. I'm always searching for that special something that will make my fishing more enjoyable or successful.
Here’s a Catch-22 and fodder for another post—does enjoyment lead to success or does success breed enjoyment???? Think about it and maybe I’ll see you out there!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
