Family rivalry in the Anglers' Corner
January 14th 2008 03:59
There aren't very many sports that allow a father and son to go head to head in competition but fishing is one of them. Denny and Chad Brauer are two anglers who are able to teach us a thing or two!
The elder Brauer, Denny, began professional competition back in 1980. Since that time, he's achieved over a dozen first place finishes, been named Angler of the Year and won the Bassmaster Classic in 1998.
In addition to his abilities with a rod, Denny has been extremely busy as a seminar speaker throughout the U.S. Although he's no a stranger to television or radio, perhaps his greatest coup would be not one but TWO appearances on the late night talk show "Late Night With David Letterman." As a result of his 1998 Bassmaster victory, he was the first outdoor athlete to be featured on the Breakfast of Champions, Wheaties, cereal box.
Son Chad, is making his own name on the tournament trail. After graduating form the University of Missouri in 1995 he began fishing the BASS circuit and quickly won three top 10 finishes in his first year.
This is all well and good but, what do they do in head to head competition?
Needless to say, Denny has been fishing a lot longer but...
In 1998 when Denny won the Bassmaster Classic, Chad finished 20th. But, there has been other competitions--
2006 Bassmaster American--Denny took 11th while Chad was 34th.
2006 Champions Choice--Denny won that one and Chad captured 20th.
However, Dad does not alway best the son. In the 2006 Capitol Clash, Chad finished 37th and Denny was 49th. In 2004 Chad nabbed the 37th spot in the Kentucky Bassmaster Open while Denny was close behind at 41st.
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
