Do you have enough fishing rods
February 13th 2008 04:38
Although I'm not overly keen on watching guys fish on TV or reading about it in magazines, I do pick up an occasional magazine that I invariably stash away for a cold day and finally look at a couple of months after I buy it. I finally took a look at one the other day. It asked the question, "How many rods are enough?" I had to grin a little because a lot of people are going to see that article and wonder.
Okay--how many rods are enough??? Before you answer that, think about how the average person fishes and how a professional does it in tournaments.
In a tournament time is money. It's not a matter of who gets their limit the fastest but, when you're fishing for money, every second you do something besides fishing, is time wasted and it's more than a little possible that a big fish may swim away as a different lure is tied to the end of the line. For that reason, a tournament angler is going to have several rods, possibly all the same, ready to go with different lures.
Conversely, when the average person goes fishing, we go with one rod, a few lures and hooks and maybe some live bait. This is not a bad thing! We can afford to take the time required to change from one lure to another or bait a hook! If things don't go right???? Do it again! What the heck?
People who know me, know I'm into fishing and sometimes give me their old rods so, at first glance, it looks like a have a lot of rods. I'm not even exactly sure how many I have. It's something like 10 or 12. But, since they were given to me, several of them overlap. Here's what I use--
2 medium weight spinning rods
1 medium casting rod that I use most of the time
1 medium heavy casting rod
2 light weight casting rods (One of which is my "trusty Zebco)
1 cheap surf rod
1 cheap fly rod
If I got to do more surf or fly fishing, I'd definitely upgrade that equipment! Something keeps telling me that I need a heavy weight rod. I'm not exactly sure why other than there's not one on the list! So far, that medium-heavy has done the trick!
For your fishing, before you answer the question question of, "How many rods are enough?" or head out to the sporting goods store, be honest and identify what you really do on the water and THEN decide how many rods are right for you.
