Don't do this!!!!!!
At the risk of sounding crass...
Sometimes when you're out fishing, you find things that make you go "WTF?????"
I had one of those moments the other day when I found the rig in the accompanying photo.
I'm not sure what they guy was thinking but he took two sliding egg sinkers, secured them on the line and topped them off with split shot at the top and bottom! (I wonder if he added the split shot for the weight or to insure the egg sinkers wouldn't move?)
Granted, the river has been pretty fast and you definitely need a lot of weight if you're fishing the bottom. However, there are better ways to go about this.
First and foremost--one sinker! I was curious and weighed this get-up on my postage scale and it came to 1.6 ounces. Not as heavy as I thought but, you can still get a sinker for 1-2 ounces.

I've goofed around in the river a lot and I've come to the conclusion that if the current is swift the best move is to borrow a page from the Surf Fisherman's Handbook and use pyramid sinkers. You can get them in a variety of sizes, they don't roll, and the shape allows them to burrow into the bottom provided it's not all rock.
Pyramid sinkers aren't only for surf fishing!
If you don't visit the shore too often, you may be hard pressed to find pyramid sinkers and it's a real bummer to lose them. (Oddly enough, living in the States, K-Mart has been a good supplier for me. Sorry, Dick's!)
