Time is running out for the cod
March 31st 2010 00:23
It's a pretty common site if you're around the coast--you look toward the horizon and see a fishing boat with its nets unfurled, slowly going back and forth raking in it's daily haul.
Yet, that same catch which feeds millions may be leading to an ecological catastrophe!
Commercial fishing techniques often harvest fish from relatively shallow depths. If this continues, we could lose certain species of fish.
An example of this impact is the common cod.
Techniques are wiping out cod that swim at shallower depths and have a genetic variant that’s absent in cod found in deeper waters. Some researchers believe the genetic variant will be lost all together if overfishing continues. Some say, “Modern fisheries are uncontrolled experiments in evolution.” Others have coined the phrase, "Turbo evolution."
Is it beyond belief to consider fisheries may be wiped out? As recently as 1992 the area off the coast of Newfoundland was fished to a point from which is is still trying to recover! Presently, we have but one large cod fishery left which is the Iceland region. Unless something is done, this last vestige of nourishment could go the same way.
So, if you notice a rise in the price of your fish 'n' chips, this could be one of the reasons!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
