Best knot for fluorocarbon? You tell me!

May 20th 2011 01:29
Although I don't spool my reels with fluorocarbon, in many instances I like a leader of FC of around 18" to four feet.

Since I'm not really a fluorocarbon guy, maybe this is THE knot and maybe it isn't. I'm on a never ending quest for the best knot for fluorocarbon so, this video caught my eye.

Many anglers complain of breakoffs with fluorocarbon. There are reasons out there for this--many of them on the scientific side. One of the biggest problems I've noticed is that too many anglers try and knot FC the same as they do monofilament. In some cases, this just won't work. Even though most anglers can tie a Palomar in their sleep, I'm not sold on it for FC.

Another problem I see is that anglers fail to moisten a knot and since fluorocarbon ends up heating the line as it cinches to form, it makes a weak spot. It is imperative, no matter what knot you use, to moisten the line and this especially true in the case of FC.

I'll get off my soap box and let you see the vid...

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
