How the moon affects your fishing
September 5th 2010 00:47
You probably know saltwater fishermen regularly check the tide before they head out to sea. They're not doing that just because the tide may affect boat handling. Rising tides also affect the fish bite. If you fish the sea that's all well and good but, did you know the tide also has bearing the bite down at your local river or lake?
Leaving out all the scientific mumbo-jumbo look at it like this—the gravity of the moon pulls at the earth. Since water is moved more easily than land, oceans, lakes, and rivers are going to fall victim to the pull on a regular basis as the earth revolves.
The first Moon/Solar tables were published back in 1936 by John Alden Knight, an avid fly angler and scientist who worked out many theories that influence fish bite. He began his work in 1926 and a decade later, his findings were published and still used to this day. The period of greatest fish activity lasts from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the moon’s relationship to the sun.
So, it stands to reason that you see anglers showing up at the crack of dawn and right at dusk. Personally, I look at it this way, fish need breakfast just like humans and they need a meal before they bed down at night.
