Great Fishing Movies
September 6th 2007 00:26
When I decided I wanted to do a list of my favorite fishing movies, it was a little harder than I expected. Coming up with the movies wasn't that hard but videos are another story! And then you have to decide if you want fishing themed movies or GREAT fishing scenes.
For instance, the 1996 Jack Nicholson film "Blood and Wine" opens with a dynamite shark fishing scene but, the movie is hardly about fishing! The same goes for 1953's "Hondo." I love The Duke but, you have to draw the line somewhere.
Here are MY favorite fishing movies in no particular order. I say, "...no particular order," because, when the mood strikes, I can tolerate a stinker. Besides, a true film aficionado appreciates the various nuances of film. *L*
Let's start things off with "Deep Blue Sea." Samuel L. Jackson had the good sense to get out of this one early on. This is one of those flicks that gets worse as it goes along. WARNING: The trailer is better than the movie!
Next would be 1958's "The Old Man and the Sea." I know, the special effects are a little lacking by today's standards but, it's Spencer Tracy in one of his best!
You MUST follow that with "Islands in the Stream!" NOT the Dolly Pardon and Kenny Rogers song! This is more Ernest Hemingway and an off shoot of the previous movie's theme. Although George C. Scott gives a great performance (as usual), I think the best part of this movie ended up, as they say, on the cutting room floor.
Next is 1937's "Captains Courageous." More Spencer Tracy with Freddie Bartholomew. They should remake this as a porn flick and call it "Little Lord Fauntleroy and the Sailor!"
Next to get the nod is "Moby Dick." Yeah, yeah! I know it's a whale. At least it's not a Titleist! (Seinfeld reference)
Following that is "The Perfect Storm." The Edmund Fitzgerald may have inspired a song but, the Andrea Gail inspired a movie!
Next up--"Orca the Killer Whale." This 1977 "Jaws" ripoff is notable only because it introduced the movie world to Bo Derek. Her part was so small that she wasn't featured in any clips I could find. This one features Charlotte Rampling.
I can't decide on a "best." Here are my 1 and 2:
"Jaws"--this movie probably ruined a lot of vacations!
Finally--"A River Runs Through It" Catch me at the right time and I'll say this is my favorite film. Next week? Well...
Honorable mention would have to go to "Gone Fishin'." This romp has its ups and downs but, it's something you can watch with the kids. I mention it because one of my favorite actors, Danny Glover, is a co-star.
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

I enjoy Islands in the Stream, so we all have our weaknesses. As for favourite fishing films a few i like that jump to mind-
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest - Freedom
Deliverance- when Burt pulls out the archery set.
Beautiful Girls - the Ice fishing
On the Hemingway kick, To Have and Have Not with Bogie and bacall
