Cool cats

December 28th 2011 01:54
It may not be very cold where you are but, December means cold weather around here and for many people that means an end to their catfish adventures until summer. As with too many things in fishing, the afsence of winter catfish depends.

Landing catfish in the winter is going to depend chiefly on they type of catfish you're after. Blue catfish, are quite active and can be found in water which will be shunned by most other fish. AND, unbelieveably enough, you may find them in shallow water! This goes against convention thinking which says deep water is the haunt of catfish. Remember, this is a MAY but if the baitfish go shallow the blues often follow.
Channel catfish
This channel cat is just one of over 2000 varieties of catfish in the world.

Depending on where you live, you may be stuck going after flathead catfish and, if that's the case, good luck because flatheads tend to be fairly dormant during cold periods and seldom even eat! If an angler is lucky enough to tangle with one, it's seldom a clean catch and is often the result of snagging the fish.

One must remember that catfish are often scavengers and feed on whatever they find on the bottom. As a result cat anglers often use only chicken livers or some type of bloody treat.

A fact that may surprise many anglers is the fact that catfish diets depend on the weather. True, they do like their meat to the point of sometimes eating their own young but, insects and different aquatic vegetation also makes up their diet.

Although anglers usually prefer live bait for catfish, you'd have to keep the previous paragraph in mind when choosing artificial lures. Various poppers or chuggers also work. AND don't forget to have a stout rod and strong line!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Another good site

January 16th 2011 04:23
Here's a good site I've been checking out the last few days.

Turns out this is actually a site for a fishing lake in France. Although I usually don't get into this type of web page, there are plenty of videos where you may learn something aside from a gallery of photos showing what you can pull out of the Lake.

Big cats in the water

October 29th 2009 01:15
Tales of giant catfish both fascinate and appall. These behemoths unite us is a fear of the murky depths although we may live hundreds if not thousands of miles from the nearest shark--what we usually think of at the mention of "monsters of the deep."

Some catfish actually do grow to tremendous sizes. Weights of over 600 pounds or over 270 kilograms and 10 feet or three meters are documented so photographs of anglers displaying fantastic catches are not uncommon. However, it's when these photographs are coupled with bogus reports that trouble or even urban legends begin.

Man eater?

October 28th 2009 01:01
Giant catfish
Stories about man-eating catfish spring up all the time from areas in Asia or South America.

Usually, the term is used to identify a giant fish having the capacity to devour a human rather than the fact that it has actually consumed human flesh.

What's that fish called?

October 19th 2009 01:53
The last time I was home to see my dad he said, "You have fish on the brain."

I just nodded and smiled because that's a lot better than having one up your penis.

Invasive catfish

July 26th 2009 00:49
Hooking a catfish can be one of the best freshwater experiences you'll ever have so, when I saw this story about putting catfish on par with sharks I was intrigued.

I was taken in because catfish can be pretty mean and can grow to unbelievable sizes.
