Can you use sardines for fish bait

The other day someone hit me up with the idea of using sardines for catfish bait.
For my money, since you have to go to the grocery store anyway, I'd rather go with the old standby chicken liver for catfish.
Live sardines are great for saltwater fishing but "live" is the operative word.

Fishy sardine smell--Granted, sardines usually have a pretty strong odor and smelly baits usually work for catfish. However, they also prefer fresh or live bait.
People may also ask about using the juices used to pack sardines. It can work as an attractant but you have to worry about the juice spoiling and getting funky on you. Further, any small particles of remaining sardine will only hasten this process.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend trying a can of sardines as bait. I've seen it and even seen fish caught using them but it's not a sure bet like using worms, minnows, or even chicken liver for catfish. If you try to catch something besides catfish, your odds of success are going to decease even further.

Sorry if I'm bursting anyone's bubble! Let me say right now if you're doing this and it's working for you, don't change no matter what you read! I'm a firm believer in the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
