How to set the hook

November 7th 2011 17:12
If you don't get fish on the hook, you won't get them out of the water.

There are a couple of hooksets out there that are popular.

You can watch this video and see what you use or try to use.

I'd like to say I use a "pull set" but, probably something like 75% of the time I get shook up and use the snap set.

Like the video says, if you use the snap set, the energy has go be released somewhere and, too often, it ends up the hook right out of the fish's mouth or ripping it out of their lip. If you're hooking fairly large fish, this usually isn't much of a problem but if you're after something like sunfish or smaller trout, you have to watch what you're doing!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Although the calendar says spring, it's still pretty cold in different parts of the country. But, natural clocks are kicking in and fish are starting to move into shallow areas as the days get longer and slightly warmer (at least to them.)
You’ll have to analyze your local water to determine where fish are and how to best catch them. If I had any shortcuts to get that done, I'd tell you!

WD-40 as a fish attractant

December 31st 2010 01:03
WD-40, fish attractant, fish oil
People often look at WD-40 as a fish attractant. One big reason for this is the myth that the product contains fish oil.

Although the exact formula is a secret, I can safely say the product does not contain fish oil. Like similar products, it is petroleum based and using it as a fish attractant is would be similar to pouring oil into the water. In other words, it's not the best thing to do even if it worked for grandpa.

Try "Urban Fishing"

A lot of people think you can only fish if you get out of the city and they end up taking two or three hour car trips to the country. Not so! Urban areas can provide countless hours of quality fishing without the time and expense of a long trip.

How the moon affects your fishing

September 5th 2010 00:47
moonrise, moon through trees
You probably know saltwater fishermen regularly check the tide before they head out to sea. They're not doing that just because the tide may affect boat handling. Rising tides also affect the fish bite. If you fish the sea that's all well and good but, did you know the tide also has bearing the bite down at your local river or lake?

Leaving out all the scientific mumbo-jumbo look at it like this—the gravity of the moon pulls at the earth. Since water is moved more easily than land, oceans, lakes, and rivers are going to fall victim to the pull on a regular basis as the earth revolves.

Get out and fish in the fall!

October 11th 2009 01:23
fly fisherman
It's till not too late to hit the water. Around here, a lot of outdoor types are thinking "hunting" and heading for the woods. That can work to an angler's advantage because it often means less fishing pressure and you may even find you have one of the "sweet spots" all to yourself.

After spring, fall is one of the easiest times to fish. Fish, just like people, aren't crazy about cool mornings so, getting a late start isn't going to hinder your chances of landing the big one like it would if it was warmer. AND the fact that the water is cooler means the fish will be more active!

A quick boilie recipe

May 1st 2009 00:23
Since they're hard to find in the States, I'll let you know that boilies are carp bait.

airdrying boilies
Somebody must do a lot of carp fishing!
There are dozens (if not hundreds) of recipes for home made boilies. The big reason for sharing this one is because I was looking around for boilies this past week and came up with ZERO.

Superglue your swimbait

January 28th 2009 05:07
This is one of those tips I've been using for a while but never mentioned because there's always some wise guy who says, "Doesn't the fish smell the glue?"

I suppose they may but bass don't seem to mind and I haven't arrived at a verdict on catfish yet.
