Good fishing--The Outer Banks
August 3rd 2007 02:10
Some of the best fishing in the United States can be found in North Carolina’s Outer banks. This area of barrier islands, over 100 miles long, is a major tourist attraction with a temperate climate and wide expenses of open beaches still awaiting the development of so many other beachfront properties of the world.
Naturally there are attractions to make any trip to the Outer Banks into a family vacation but the area is truly an angler’s paradise! Fly, surf, freshwater, deep sea, or charter fishing are offered with seasons lasting throughout the year. With the multitude of choices available, the possibilities of the harvest are practically endless! Trout, perch, sea bass, tuna, striped bass, and grouper are just some of the species available. New for 2007 is the requirement of a license even for surf fishing. This new law extends three miles out to sea so, if you haven’t been there lately, things are definitely different. However, rather than being stuck with the high price of buying an out of state fishing license, a 10 day license is available for a much lower price.
If the ocean is not for you, there are still plenty of freshwater opportunities offering bass and even catfish. During the spring crank and spinner baits will do the trick and later simple worms are a good bet. Bass season begins in April and runs thru November.
Those looking for more of a challenge can try their luck at any of several fishing piers that can be found along the coast and extend several hundred yards into the Atlantic Ocean. Although personal equipment is always welcome, anglers can rent tackle as well as pick up valuable tips from pier employees. Open 24 hours a day, the piers are lighted for night fishing and employees are glad to assist new comers. Although it’s tempting to bring every conceivable piece of equipment with you, suitable equipment can be purchased at the piers as well as any of the several tackle shops in the area.
Great fishing coupled with attractions and natural beauty of the Outer Banks will insure a vacation you'll long remember!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
