A fish only a few inches long has halted construction of dams on a Central Otago river in New ZSealand. This victory for environmental groups is the end result of efforts to save a rare fish known as the Gollum--the same as the character from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
The 15-centimeter fish, not even 6 inches, Gollum galaxias, is only found on New Zealand's Stewart Island. A local energy company wants to build a man-made lake and dam on the Nevis River which is the fish's habitat.
A tribunal appointed by the Ministry for the Environment decided to protect the "bug eyed" fish after receiving petitions from anglers, environmental groups, kayakers, and even gold-miners.
