What are grubs?
October 23rd 2009 00:59
In nature grubs are the larval stage of beetles. Grubs live beneath the ground and eat the tender roots of your lawn grass. They also make a decent fishing bait. Unfortunately, it's not as easy to find grubs as it is to find worms. Unless you buy live grubs from a bait shop, the easiest thing to do is use artificial grubs and maybe spice them up with a little attractant.
When it comes to fishing, grubs make pretty good bait. Bait manufacturers must agree. They make several offerings. I'm partial to the curly tail variety as you can probably tell from the picture. Although I've never had carp give a second look to a grub, several fish that come into the shallows will bite on your offering. Around here bass and sauger are prime victims of their enticement.
There are a couple different ways to rig a grub. I like to use a round jig, such as the picture on the right, and skip it along the bottom. Some sharp eyed reader is going to say that I'm a little sloppy in my rigging. I use this method for grubs because it allows the grub to lie at an angle to the jig or bottom rather than being weighted straight down by the jig.
Another way to rig your grub is weedless with no wight. This allows a slow decent that fish find irresistible. The only problem I've found with this is matching up a hook and grub because, sometimes, a grub may be too small for the hook you have and it's really hard to find small worm hooks. If you try this, I suggest a fluorocarbon leader to make things look as natural as possible.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
