WD-40 as a fish attractant

December 31st 2010 01:03
WD-40, fish attractant, fish oil
People often look at WD-40 as a fish attractant. One big reason for this is the myth that the product contains fish oil.

Although the exact formula is a secret, I can safely say the product does not contain fish oil. Like similar products, it is petroleum based and using it as a fish attractant is would be similar to pouring oil into the water. In other words, it's not the best thing to do even if it worked for grandpa.

Despite what I've just said, this post is not an indictment of WD-40. I make it a point to always have some under the sink or in my garage.

WD-40 offers a dynamite page that includes several uses for their product but, they don't say a darned thing about fish attractants!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Staying hydrated

January 25th 2009 03:13
death valley
Although here in Pennsylvania, summer heat is the LAST thing on people's mind, the sun actually does shine in other parts of the world. AND it will shine again here!

A couple of things are important when you're fishing and the sun is beating down. Those important items are sunglasses and drinking water. I've talked about sunglasses before—they're going to keep the glare away and make it easier to see. It's easy to know when you need sunglasses. Usually, if you find yourself squinting, it's time to pull out the shades!

If tungesten didn't cost so much...

January 4th 2009 01:50
worm weights
The hardness of tungsten can be sensed when you know the sinker on the right is lead.
When it comes to saving the environment, there's no denying the advantages of tungsten weights. This is a metal that has gained a lot of popularity among anglers because tungsten is denser than lead which means that a tungsten weight can actually be smaller than a comparable lead weight depending upon its design and metal purity. Another advantage of tungsten's density is the fact that it is far more sensitive when fishing on the bottom. Vibrations will travel up your line and through your rod differently depending on if the bottom is mud, rock or wood.

Despite the advantages, anglers are often put off by the hefty price tag of tungsten weights. Although it’s difficult, if not impossible, to put an exact figure on the price of a ton of tungsten, it's safe to say it will always be more expensive than lead.

December 21st 2008 01:51
Have you ever been fishing and snagged your buddy? How about getting your line caught in the weeds behind you? Or--how about when you look up to see your hook going in one direction and the bait flying off in another?

No matter what kind of bait you use, you can't catch fish if they're not there. How do you know if fish are around? You can always go with tried and true methods and fish weed beds and structure but, what if you don't have the time to make what may be futile attempts and you need to know NOW?

It makes no difference if you're fishing from the shore or a boat, a fish finder is just the thing to eliminate non-productive areas.

Think you don't need a tacklebox?

April 13th 2008 00:58
When people say, "I don't fish that much. Do I really need a tacklebox?" I say, "Yes!"

As you fish more and more, lures and other tackle accumulate. You're going to need somewhere to store all the gear and it's not a good idea to put hooks in your pocket.

Using attractants

For some anglers, when it comes to landing the "big one" all it takes is an extra split second, time for a good hook set, and that trophy is as good as on the wall. Now, thanks to years of research and development, the prize may be within reach.

happy hooker, tackle shop, bait
Although this establishment has appeared in countless photos, this one came from morguefile.com.

Every time I think I’m done talking about snags, I remember something else. (Get the feeling I’ve lost a been hung up a time or two?)
bottom bouncer, snag, deep
One of the most overlooked items any angler can have is a bottom bouncer. These handy items are often associated with walleye fishermen but can easily be used for any application where an angler needs to get their bait to the bottom without getting hung up.
