Upgrade your reel handle

May 1st 2011 01:19
Here's an ad that popped up in my in-box the other day.

deep sea fishing
New fishing equipment comes out every other day so I'm not real crazy about promoting items unless I use them or it's one of those "Why didn't they think of this sooner?"

These after market reel handles from Reel Power Handles fall into the latter category and can be just the ticket if you do battle with big fish.

If you read this blog very often, you'll know I'm not a deep sea angler. None the less, big cat fish and muskies have shown me the need for a descent reel and, sometimes, it's only the cranking handle that makes the difference between something you feel good about using and a reel that sets in the garage.

You can check out the website yourself but, I'd like to point out Real Power Handles are made from aluminum to maintain strength while not adding weight to your rig. In fact, the new handle may be just a bit lighter that the old handle!

The only down side is that Real Power Handles start at 30 bucks USD a pop. Some people may be put off by this and I have to admit you can get a reel for less than that. However, if you've already spent hundreds on an "almost" reel, thirty bucks isn't a lot to pay to make it perfect.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

WD-40 as a fish attractant

December 31st 2010 01:03
WD-40, fish attractant, fish oil
People often look at WD-40 as a fish attractant. One big reason for this is the myth that the product contains fish oil.

Although the exact formula is a secret, I can safely say the product does not contain fish oil. Like similar products, it is petroleum based and using it as a fish attractant is would be similar to pouring oil into the water. In other words, it's not the best thing to do even if it worked for grandpa.

Here's a really good video illustrating a bottom bouncer--a great way to fish the bottom while on the move and not get snagged.

Staying hydrated

Although here in Pennsylvania, summer heat is the LAST thing on people's mind, the sun actually does shine in other parts of the world. AND it will shine again here!

A couple of things are important when you're fishing and the sun is beating down. Those important items are sunglasses and drinking water. I've talked about sunglasses before—they're going to keep the glare away and make it easier to see. It's easy to know when you need sunglasses. Usually, if you find yourself squinting, it's time to pull out the shades!

Just because you have some kind of physical handicap, doesn't mean you can't appreciate the beauty of nature.

It's not just a handicap that makes it harder to use limbs than it used to be. Auto accidents, bad falls, or strokes happen every day.

A little reverse engineering

May 25th 2008 00:21
I think having a fishing cart like the one in the picture would be great IF I needed it.

fishing cart
I first saw fishing carts when I was pier fishing on the Outer Banks and figured that everybody made their own until I did a little research and found out that you can buy these things PRE-made!

Think you don't need a tacklebox?

April 13th 2008 00:58
When people say, "I don't fish that much. Do I really need a tacklebox?" I say, "Yes!"

As you fish more and more, lures and other tackle accumulate. You're going to need somewhere to store all the gear and it's not a good idea to put hooks in your pocket.

How much line is on your reel?

April 8th 2008 00:47
line counter
Have you ever made what you thought was GREAT cast only to have the lure snap back at you because you didn't have enough line on your reel?

Granted, you can tie your line to a tree and walk off a distance that should cover any cast but, what do you do if it snows, rains or is dark?

Do you have a hook file?

hook sharpening stone
Here is a little gizmo that doesn't cost much but will give you lots of mileage.

Pictured to the right is a sharpening stone made especially for fish hooks. All you need to do to bring a dull hook back to life is run it along the groove at a 45 degree angle a few times and your hooks are as good as new.

A fishing log for you

March 16th 2008 00:34
In order to achieve success when fishing, it takes a lot of practice and more trial and error than I care to admit. One way to eliminate some of the time wasted with trial and error is to record your attempts and then repeat what worked for you and see where you're doing right or wrong

The log I've included can help you a great deal. This is fairly basic. There are logs for your computer but I like an old-fashioned paper log because, if you're like me, too many details are forgotten by the time you get around to putting info into the computer.

Keep your minnows alive

March 11th 2008 01:33
When you’re out fishing and the sun is shining and everything seems right with the world, it doesn’t take long for your minnows to die. The warmer it is, the less time it takes.

Maybe they even started dying before you got your line wet! The hoopla of going from a big tank at the bait shop to your minnow bucket may be too much for them to handle. Something else to think about is the trip to the water hole. Minnows don’t handle the stress of a car’s constant vibration very well so, it’s a good idea to get your minnows as close to your destination as possible.
