Angling Fish - by James Rickard

Think you don't need a tacklebox?

April 13th 2008 00:58
When people say, "I don't fish that much. Do I really need a tacklebox?" I say, "Yes!"

As you fish more and more, lures and other tackle accumulate. You're going to need somewhere to store all the gear and it's not a good idea to put hooks in your pocket.

So, what do you keep in a tacklebox? How about lures, sinkers, swivels, bobbers, and hooks for sure? I usually carry a bottom bouncer and an some extra line. I've even seen guys carry an extra reel. This is a little extreme although I used to carry an old Zebco reel until my dad gave me a rod that matched up well with the reel. Aside from that, now I'm using better equipment and I like to think that I have enough grasp on things to notice if something "isn't quite right".

If you don't have a tacklebox and go shopping for one, I implore you to pick out a box bigger that you presently need. This will give you room to grow and as you get more tackle you'll have room for things like suntan lotion, lip balm, band aids, and attractants.

Hard side tacklebox
Some people like a hard box.
Another question people often ask is, "What kind of tacklebox should I buy?" That's a matter of preference. Some people like a tacklebox with fold-out trays or trays that can be removed. With this arrangement, I recommend two boxes--one for your "regular" fishing and another for "special" applications such as night or surf fishing.

Since tackleboxes are a matter of preference, here's what I PREFER----

soft side case
I prefer something easier to carry.
For the past couple of years , I've been carrying a soft sided case with removable, compartmentalized containers. I like this set-up because all I have to do is throw the carrying strap over my shoulder and go. Also, my hands are free to steady myself over uneven ground.

Finally, if I do something "special", I just remove a couple of containers and replace them with the appropriate gear.

It seems like companies are getting away from metal tackleboxes and going with plastic. There's not much we can do about that but, it's like I always say, "Stick with a known company and you probably won't go wrong."

When it comes time to buy, it's okay to listen to the guy at the store but remember YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED. Don't be swayed by sales talk! If you have doubts or feel uneasy, get the Heck out of there! That goes for ALL shopping! It may be their job to serve you but, they're also there to sell! Remember every store is in business to move merchandise.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Maybe a better question would be, "What's the deal with STATE TROOPERS and sunglasses?"
