Angling Fish - by James Rickard

How it all began

January 1st 2008 03:30

It started innocently enough. I never really even LIKED fishing growing up as a kid and then WHAM! Kind of like girls back in junior high, things just sort of snuck up on me.

I accompanied my dad on evening trips to a small pond near our home but he was never much of a fisherman. His attraction to the water fizzled out after a while and his Zebco rod and reel combination ended up collecting dust in our garage.

Now days, it seems that every waking hour I’m either fishing, getting ready to go fish, or writing about it. People say I’m obsessed but it’s hard not to be. You’re outdoors in the beauty of nature matching wits against the survival instincts of another species. You’re either reveling in the silence of your solitude or your enjoying the company of good friends.

I know there are people out there who can’t relate to this but I can’t help it. Surely there’s something you’re passionate about! I’m sure there are things that you do every day that I wouldn’t understand. But if you do understand and maybe even have such an obsession, you know where I’m coming from.

The least you can do is pass on the legacy of fishing. Maybe it was your dad who got you fishing. Maybe it was your grandfather—a friend, or maybe you decided on your own after seeing some guys on TV.

Sometimes the best part of fishing is when you don’t catch anything and get a chance to see a bright sailboat silhouetted against a blue sky, listen to a bird’s song, or watch the beauty of a dragonfly as it skims along the water’s surface.

If you’ve read this far, you probably know what I’m talking about. If you don’t—just be glad I’m not into professional bull riding!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

I went fishing the other day

It's not really my thing, but I can completely understand your passion.

If you're into fishing you HAVE to catch something now and then to keep it interesting but, some of the best trips I've had is when I got side tracked and ended up hiking, enjoying the animals or some extra special scenery!

You know James, there are a lot of worse things to become addicted to and this is also one of the least destructive habits; unless you're a power dynamite fisherman like some birds. Raven

Raven,
Thanks for stopping in. It could be worse--that's for sure.

I don't know if you have satellite or cable t.v. but it looks like Versus and ESPN2 are starting some of their fishing shows this week. I don't know if any of the truly informative shows are on yet!

fishing is a great excuse to have something to do when you're relaxing in a natural setting... it's the opposite of hiking, which is all about working hard to get to a goal..!
