How to develop a pattern when fishing

July 9th 2010 20:33
It's one of those days when you're out there flipping, pitching, casting like crazy with what ever lures you have. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

To duplicate the success you enjoyed earlier, go back and figure out exactly what you were doing when you caught something. Was there some kind of cover or structure? Although I'm not a big believer in lure color being a factor, I will chose between light and dark or reflective finishes when it comes to patterns. Also, take note of the time of day. Things may even boil down to your retrieve. Fast? Slow? Stop and go?

To spell it out--duplicate what worked. If you caught fish doing one particular thing, try to do it again! It may be pretty tough do duplicate conditions at 8 a.m. when it's three hours later but, you get the idea. When you consider the time, it's probably going to have to be for the next time you go fishing. .

A pattern will allow you to fish one spot, go to another, and, hopefully, enjoy a degree of success. Developing a pattern is not as simple as it sounds. On the other hand, it's not that hard either! Duplicating earlier success is all it is. You can form a pattern whether fishing from shore or a boat. An example of a very simple pattern would be using a lure that worked earlier, casting to the very same area, as close as possible to a time you fished before.

It's basically the same when fishing from a boat but don't mix your boat patterns with your shore patterns. Unless you have electronics which allow you to find hidden structure which will influence the bite, you'll probably be wasting your time using what worked from shore.

A few words of warning, pattern fishing isn’t always going to work, but if the bite has grown slow, it's definitely worth a shot.
