Weekend tip--Use your rod as a measuring stick
March 8th 2008 04:10
It never fails. You're fishing with a friend and one of you hook up with a really big one and manages to land it.
"How big is that thing?" one says.
The other just shrugs.
Granted, there's a complicated formula to figure the weight of a fish but if you just want to know how big it is, here's a few simple rules to remember and you can always get in the ballpark with an approximate length!
All you need to remember is the length of three important parts of your rod--the handle, rod length, and distance from the handle to the first guide. Forget about inches or centimeters; feet or meters. This is YOUR measuring stick!
Then, after you land a fish, just hold it next to the appropriate part of you rod and you'll get a rough idea of just how big your catch may be!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

I suspect in my case it would have been "how small it was".

*L* I wrote the post about three weeks ago and NEVER even thought of that! I've been trying to turn over a new leaf so, maybe it's working and I don't realize it!
