How to peg a sinker
July 22nd 2008 03:40
Just because you know how to do something is no sign you do it. It's kind of like the guy at work who can pick locks but won't show me how.
Some people advocate "pegging" their sinker and some stay away from the practice. I usually fall into the latter category.
Pegging is what it sounds like. Take a tooth pick and break it off at the end of your worm weight to keep it from sliding up and down your line. If you don't have a toothpick, IMPROVISE. Whittle a match stick or pick up a twig from the ground and whittle on that. Chances are, if you're in a situation where you need to peg your sinker, there will be something us can use!
I'm not overly crazy about pegging my line. Friction is holding you weight against the line and this can create a weak spot or kink. This is especially true with fluorocarbon.

Insert a toothpick to wedge against the line and sinker, snap off the excess, and you have a weight that won't move.
Any time you fish around docks or around heavy cover is a good time to peg your weight. Pegging will keep your sinker close to your lure and will give you a better feel for things in the brush since a fish can't take off with your bait and double your line around a fallen limb or other obstacle while you think you're feeling the weight bounce around. Most importantly, a pegged lure will get through a cover or vegetation!
On the other hand, some fish such as carp, can detect the presence of a sinker and will drop your bait before you have time to set the hook.
Sometimes, fishing is like life--full of compromises!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Sorry I'm just getting back. I think that server problem was keeping me out! When it comes to fishing, I think I'm in that no-man's-land between knowing too much for some people but not enough for others!
