How to put line on a reel
August 3rd 2008 00:43
I saw this video on YouTube and was just a little taken back. This works for SOME reels and not for others!
Some people may think I'm a little too full of myself but I really don't like this method for spinning reels--what some people call an "open face reel."
I have no problem with this method for baitcasting reels! As for the knot he uses, we all have slight variations of the same technique so I'm not faulting that.
However, cranking like this with a spinning reel or even a spincast model can lead to problems down the road such as line twist, kinks, and/or tangles!
My whole hearted recommendation is to take the new line, similar to what you see here, lay it on the ground, probably label down, and THEN crank it onto your reel with the circle of the spool twist following the same direction of your reel rotation.
What you'll end up doing is putting your line on the reel with the same twist it took when it was wound onto the packaging spool. You're simply following what is already there instead of trying to "go against the grain."
Do this and I promise you'll have less hassle!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
