Human medications found in fish
September 1st 2009 00:55
The next time you take a trip and forget your medication, you can simply grab a fish from the local river as a substitute.
A recent study by Baylor University found common drugs prescribed for heart problems and depression as well as remnants from over the counter medications and personal care products finding their way into rivers and, eventually, fish near major U.S. cities such as Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia, Orlando, and Phoenix.

In reality, one would have to eat loads of fish t obtain a therapeutic dose of a given medication. Still, danger lies in wait for aquatic creatures which are constantly exposed to the contaminated waters.
Contamination comes from two sources--both of which can be traced back to man--they are unmetabolized drugs that people have ingested and passed through their system and unused medications that are not disposed of properly.
In view of the study, the Environmental Protection Agency has called for further studies to determine the effects of drinking drug contaminated water during a period of several years. If that is the case, it may behoove mankind to keep an eye fish in each location.
Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
