The Hunt for Big Fish--check it out!

March 30th 2009 20:48
Larry Dahlberg
The host with what may be a trophy for most people. It's another day at the office for him.
Although this blog isn't heading toward a critique of TV fishing programs, after mentioning Hook 'n' Look, I'd be remiss not to mention my favorite show, "The Hunt For Big Fish" with Larry Dahlberg. I've been watching this program for three or four years now because, unlike a lot of fishing programs out there, "The Hunt for Big Fish" uses unusual camera angles, creative editing, and the host catches fish like you'd NEVER imagine.

You may be familiar with the host if you're into fly fishing. The Dahlberg Diver was invented by former guide, Fishing Hall of Fame inductee, and host Larry Dahlberg.

Like most of the programs on its Versus cable home, "The Hunt for Big Fish" is rotated so each episode is aired a few times each week. While most fishing programs focus on tactics or equipment you may use on your next fishing excursion, "The Hunt for Big Fish" travels the globe to feature exotic species. Along with heavy duty fishing action, you may get a glimpse into the life style of people totally foreign to our way of life. Although most episodes feature trips to foreign locations, episodes are also dedicated to featuring the adventure of kids going to the local river or a recent episode I enjoyed which detailed pouring your own plastic lures.

Although I can't say I live my life vicariously though the program, "The Hunt for Big Fish" has helped me have an appreciation for recently discovered giant stingrays as well as Peacock Bass. (Now, if I could just figure out my attraction to Reddies!)

It's hard to talk about the program and not mention Dahlberg's website, huntforbigfish.com. By clicking on the site, you can order different products in addition to recordings he has composed along with his friend, Dave Swanson. To Dahlberg's credit, this has never been mentioned on the program.

Here's a clip from YouTube showing Dalhberg in Suriname catching a Red Tail catfish. It's not the best example of his program but it shows the kind of fish he lands.

One of my standard lines to describe a fishing program I like is, "It's not you're average fishing show." I have to say it about this one, also. If you can pick up Versus, give "The Hunt for Big Fish" a look see. Even if you don't fish, you may like it.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!

*L* I'm only Aussie because of all the Foster's Lager I drank in college and the AFL I watched on TV. Is "tiddler" one of those expressions I should know?

James, it just refers to a little one, like little fish. like tiny fish.
