It's okay to fish in the rain!

July 3rd 2008 00:49
Despite what you may think, one of the best times to fish may be when it rains! Throw on your rain gear during a nice warm shower and you may be in for a treat!

Worms and bugs get washed into the water when it rains and fish know this. Figuring food is on the way, the fish are in a feeding frenzy so, use this to your advantage!

One reason for heightened fish activity is that every drop of rain that hits the water’s surface brings oxygen. The more it rains, the more oxygen is introduced to allow fish to swim faster and longer without getting tired.

Another reason for fishing during a rain storm has to do with what the fish see—or DON’T see. With all the ripples caused by the raindrops, anything on top of the water is going to be distorted when viewed by the fish. That goes for YOU too! Normally, if you can see a fish, he can see you also. That’s still going to be the rule but you can figure that the fish will be looking through a lot of splashes and ripples.

Also, it may be good to point out that this isn’t a good time to try top water lures. The surface disturbance caused by most top water baits is going to be negated by any turbulence caused by the falling rain. Also, since the surface is going to be actively moving, it’s not a good idea to depend on a bobber or float. It’s okay if you have to use one to suspend your bait but if you’re depending on it to detect bites, you may be in for a long afternoon!

All in all, if the forecast calls for rain, you don’t have to cancel your fishing. In fact, as the less hearty leave prime fishing spots, it may be to your advantage. Just remember though, if you see lightning, don’t hesitate to get away from the water as fast as you can. Aside from putting yourself in danger, these weather elements will spook the fish and spoil your efforts.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
