The lighter side of fishing--Kathryn Maroun
July 23rd 2007 08:32
It’s time to put preconceived ideas of anglers aside and realize that there’s a new breed of fisherman out there. In fact, some aren’t even fisherMEN! They are fisherWOMEN and one of the best and most beautiful is Kathryn Maroun.
Although relatively unknown outside fishing circles and her native Canada, Kathryn brings a mixture of fly fishing expertise and exuberant personality to the forefront and is featured every week in her own television program entitled “What a Catch!” which appears in the United States on the Versus Network.
Kathryn is more than just another pretty face on TV. She’s one of only three women in all of Canada to be certified in fly fishing and is also the ONLY woman in Canada certified as a casting instructor!
Although Kathryn’s talents are most evident when she uses a rod and reel, it is her other efforts that many find fascinating. In the past she has acted as National Director of Trout Unlimited Canada which is an organization working to protect Canada’s water resources. Perhaps her most noteworthy job has been co-founder of Casting for Recovery Canada which utilizes fly fishing to aid breast cancer survivors.
Her television broadcasts are unlike other fishing programs in that it is not sponsor driven. Rather than praising the merits of a sponsor's latest product, she can devote a few extra moments to her own whims. What a Catch! even looks different than other fishing programs and that’s because, unlike most fishing shows, it’s taped in Hi Definition utilizing up to three cameras.
Those looking for fishing tips may be frustrated because a portion of each episode is devoted to learning about the customs of each location–locations that can vary from the Bahamas to Brazil and Africa! None the less, each half hour is packed with breathtaking shots of fishing action and extraordinary scenery as different cultures are explored.
