How to tie a blood knot

October 31st 2008 03:12
Here's a good video I found on tying a blood knot.

I talked about this not that long ago but the video wasn't available then and it may make things clearer.

I like the blood knot because it can be used by fly anglers, or fresh and salt water anglers.

This a real handy knot to join two lines of similar diameter! Further, once the knot is secure, you can trim the tag ends and end up with a knot so smooth that it still slips through the guides on your rod without impeding your cast.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

The San Diego Jam

I heard a cool one today. I didn’t exactly hear it. I ran across it on the web.

As a new devotee of the reverse clinch knot, I was lead onto a fishing knot forum. Low and behold! There’s another name for it—the San Diego Jam!

Palomar knot video

June 14th 2008 19:39
This is a really good video on how to tie the Palomar knot. It's super strong and easy--a combination that's hard to beat!

I use it about 90% of the time. In fact, the only time I don't use it is when I tie spinner baits, leaders, two lines, or tie my main line to a reel.

Weekend tip--reverse clinch knot

March 29th 2008 00:26
Here's a clip with Alton Jones showing how to tie the reverse clinch knot.

I'll admit that this is a new one on me and I've never tried it. However, I tested it with Berkley Fireline and Vanish Transition in addition to whatever kind of mono filament I have. I'm not a scientist but, after putting some stress on the knot with a fish scale I have, the line broke before the knot so, I give it a thumbs up *L*

Weekend tip--Uni-Knot

December 22nd 2007 02:56
The uni-knot, slip-knot, or what ever you want to call it is a strong, reliable and EASY to tie knot that is good for securing hooks or tying line to your reel. Some people call this a hangman's knot. I'm a BIG fan of the Duke so, trust me, this is a little different from what they used for neck tie parties.

Weekend tip--the clinch knot

December 15th 2007 03:39
Unless you're a Boy Scout with a lot of merit badges, you're probably not going to know all the knots out there. Heck, I may know the names but to actually use them...

My philosophy is this--pick out the knots you need, make sure they're strong, and get good at using them!

This is a simple but, more importantly, STRONG knot you can use to join two lines of different diameters. If you're into fly fishing, this is THE knot to use to join leaders and tippets!

Weekend tip--snell knot

September 22nd 2007 00:51
The Snell Knot is a good knot to use to tie hooks. BUT, if you use a snell you will be forced to use a leader separate from your main line because it uses both ends of the line to tie it.

1. Feed one end of the leader through the hook's eye going about 4 inches past the eye and then feed the other end of the leader through the eye in the opposite direction. Hold the hook and leader ends between your thumb and forefinger with the excess hanging down in a large loop

Weekend tip--palomar knot

The Palomar is one of the strongest, if not THE strongest, knot an angler can use! This is a good way to attach hooks or any other tackle to your line. If you only learn one knot, make it this one!
