Anglers are responding to the environment
July 8th 2009 01:04
Every now and then I spout off about environmental concerns. I have to admit that I'm at it again but this time I'm going to say something good.
Happily, I can say I'm finding less remnants (bait containers, fishing line, etc.) left behind by anglers. BUT the thing that really excites me is the fact that a lot of what I'm finding shows anglers are getting the message about lead being bad for the environment and other environmental concerns.
The picture I'm including with this post shows some of the items I've run across this summer.

First of all, as I said, I haven't found nearly as much fishing line as I have the past few years. A lot of people would say this is because there are less people fishing as a result of the lousy economy. Wetting a line is a pretty cheap hobby so I'd have to argue that point.
The hook in the picture is definitely a circle hook and probably a Mutzuo on an 18' fluorocarbon leader. I have some of the same hooks so, I can be fairly certain of the details.
As for the sinkers; left to right--I have NO idea about the first one. When I saw it in the mud, I thought it was a non-lead Water Gremlin sinker but it's made from stone. They're certainly not selling them around here in any great numbers but someone had the right idea!
Next to that is another one I'm not too sure about. It's definitely not lead but it appears to be rusting so, it must be some sort of iron compound. Another one I haven't seen on the market around here but I wouldn't mind having a few.

Beside that one is a sinker that must have been made by someone with more time than anything else. After taking this picture, I took a hack saw to the weight and it seemed to be made out of something like auto body puddy. The remnants were a little too gritty for body puddy so it may have been some kind of plumbers' puddy.
The far right sinker is definitely an egg sinker from Eco Weights.
The two sinkers above that are a worm weight, probably tungsten and a small egg sinker from South Bend which seems to be an extension of their experience with Eco Weights. At any rate, it's definitely not lead because it's much harder than a comparable lead sinker.

I'm not so full of myself that I think everyone's reading my blog but, it's nice to know that I'm not the only angler out there who worries about this kind of stuff!
Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
