Lures you ought to have
February 19th 2008 07:28
Since September of last year, I’ve come across no less than FOUR lists mentioning the “best” lures around—two website and two magazines. Some call them the “best.” Another place calls them “classics.” I think it’s a bit much to call a lure the “best” without short changing whole groups of people because a lure that’s great in one location can do nothing in another. Also, I honestly doubt if modern lure manufacturing has been at it long enough to call anything a “classic.” The number of lures mentioned in the articles I’ve seen varies from three lures called the “best” to 50 all time "classics." I don’t have the audacity to say that any three are the “best” and a blog should be too short to outline fifty.
None the less, here are MY picks for top fishgetters. Call them what you will. These lures that have been on the market a few decades and are as effective today as they were when they were first introduced. I'm not going to deal with the myriad selection of soft plastics on the market and focus on hard baits because there are just too many plastics out there! You can bet that if you have only these lures, you’re still going to be outfishing a lot of your friends!

Rat-L-Trap--Available in several sizes and color configurations, this lipless crankbait is a proven fishgetter for everything from trout to stripers! All you have to do is throw it out there and reel it back and you’ll probably get something.
Rooster Tail—Like all of the lures mentioned here, this is another versatile lure but it really shines when you’re after rainbow trout. This picture is just one of its many combinations of size and color.
Zara Spook—This is one of the oldest topwater lures around and is still catching fish of all kinds every day. Its simple design remains one of the top fishgetters out there and older versions are being scooped up by collectors everywhere.
Jitterbug—this is another old topwater design that will continue to be used as long as it’s produced. Available in a wide variety of styles and sizes, the Jitterbug is as useful today as it was when it was introduced in the 1930’s.
Dardevel Spinnie—I will admit, this is the one lure in the group that I DO NOT have. However, I have a good excuse, there are so many knock offs of this classic style that I have enough red and white spoons! Too many anglers make the mistake of simply throwing this lure into the water and reeling back. For optimum results, cast and retrieve with a sweeping or jerking motion—anything to make an erratic retrieval--and your hook ups will increase.
Rapala Floating Minnow—I may be jumping the gun a bit on this one. Rapala lures have been around a few years but I may be a bit premature citing the Floating Minnow since Rapala lures were available for many years only in their native Finland. Regardless, the company has already risen to be a leader in all fishing products and is already a force to be reckoned with in the industry and will, certainly as time goes by, be as well known as Berkley or Zebco.
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
