Make your own trailers
April 28th 2011 01:03
A while back, a touring professional angler told me he never used a spinner bait without a trailer.
In case you don't know what a trailer is, when it comes to fishing, it's an additional enticement you can put on a spinner bait hook to draw in fish.
Although you can find trailers of many types on the market today, I like to make my own from soft plastics I already have.
What I do is fairly simple and I usually end up using plastic worms other anglers have discarded as being "torn up."
After you use a plastic worm several times, it gets chopped up from putting the hook in and out of it. This is especially true with whacky rigging where you hook the worm right through the middle.
I chop the worm in half and take the better half for my trailer. I add it to my spinner bait and have trailer that didn't cost me a darned thing! Many times, it's just a plastic lure that other anglers have thrown away. No wonder you often see me drinking a Coke when I fish!
