Shark finning banned in Marshall Islands

March 26th 2011 00:44
This post is related to what I was talking about yesterday.

Worries about the illegal trade of shark fins and sea cucumbers has resulted in banning the trade of both products in the Marshall islands.

marshall islands
The Marshall Islands is a Micronesian nation of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, slightly north of the Equator and a bit west of the International Date Line. The island group can be found on a map by looking north and slightly east of Australia. You might have heard about the islands because they were the site of many U.S. nuclear tests following WWII.

Although you can read the whole article here, the upshot is that the trade has continued although a company was legallyharvesting sea life during the last decade. Since then, illegal trade has continued even though the company is no longer in business.

As the article states, there are flaws in the legislation but, any action is better than none.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
