There's plenty of mercury in fish

By now it should come as no surprise that mercury is found in most fish. However, a U.S. government report released this week underscores just how serious the problem has become. In a study of nearly 300 streams throughout the country, every fish observed showed traces of mercury--some more than other but, every fish none the less.

It should be pointed out that this study refers to fish caught in the wild and does NOT include fish raised for human consumption. In short, fish purchased at the corner market is as safe, or unsafe, as ever.

Studied species included, bass, catfish, and trout.

Prior studies have shown eating fish with high levels of mercury can damage the nervous system as well as harm a developing fetus.

One of the chief sources of mercury in our fish is coal fired energy plants. As fuels burn, emissions from the smokestacks fall back to Earth where they are converted to a mercury that enters the food chain to eventually harm both animals and man.

You can read more about the findings here.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Sad indeed... As humans progress, the environment deteriorates...

Thanks for stopping by guys! It's not like I have a pipeline on environmental stuff but this came out Wednesday and I got wind of it that evening. I started to pass on mentioning in on here because I blogged about the horrors of mercury a while back but this report started making the rounds as soon as it came out. It even made the morning news shows. I think the biggest thing that got everyone is the same thing that got me. Even though no particular area was studied and there were no particular axes to grind, EVERY fish studied had mercury to some degree.
