There's plenty of mercury in fish
August 22nd 2009 04:47
By now it should come as no surprise that mercury is found in most fish. However, a U.S. government report released this week underscores just how serious the problem has become. In a study of nearly 300 streams throughout the country, every fish observed showed traces of mercury--some more than other but, every fish none the less.
It should be pointed out that this study refers to fish caught in the wild and does NOT include fish raised for human consumption. In short, fish purchased at the corner market is as safe, or unsafe, as ever.
Studied species included, bass, catfish, and trout.
Prior studies have shown eating fish with high levels of mercury can damage the nervous system as well as harm a developing fetus.
One of the chief sources of mercury in our fish is coal fired energy plants. As fuels burn, emissions from the smokestacks fall back to Earth where they are converted to a mercury that enters the food chain to eventually harm both animals and man.
You can read more about the findings here.
