Angling Fish - by James Rickard

More about line spooling

August 4th 2008 00:16
This post sort of goes along with yesterday's post about spooling line on your reel.

As I said yesterday, if you crank line onto you spinning reel as this product invites or the way it was described in the YouTube video, problems are sure to result!

Plano Line Spool Box
Illustrated at the right is the Plano Line Spool Box. This product isn't very expensive and I envision a lot of people rushing out to buy it for the price and convenience but without knowing how to properly spool a reel, they may be wasting their money and would be better off storing their line in a shoe box!

At first glance, the Plano Line Spool Box sounds like a great idea. Here you have see-through container for SIX spools of line! However, like a lot of fishing paraphernalia, I think this was designed to lure anglers and NOT fish.

Something that holds six spools of line sounds real good providing the spools fit! The spools like you see in the picture are about an inch wide. Some line spools are around 2.5 inches and others are about 1.5 inches. (I wonder what would happen if I bought line in Canada where everything is metric?)

The reason I'm not crazy about this or similar products is that they aid you in the practice of improperly spooling your reel! With these it's tempting to tie your line and start cranking. If you have a spinning reel or a spincast reel, you just screwed up!

With a either a spinning reel or spincaster, lay the spool of replacement line on the ground. THEN you secure it to your reel following the existing spiral as it comes off the packaging spool before you crank the new line onto your reel.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Watch that Raven, James, he'll probably build a nest with those.

But I must say it's a pretty box of ribbons you have there, spooling indeed.

How about if we use katyzzz's idea, and make RIBBON boxes instead of line boxes?
