New species in Eastern Pacific
August 26th 2008 00:03
With all the Doom & Gloom, going to Hell in a Hand Basket stories you hear about the environment, it's always encouraging to hear when something new is discovered.
This past week, a new species was discovered in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The Goliath Grouper (not to be confused with the Atlantic Goliath Grouper--yeah--right!) was identified in an area where it has lived all along, happily feeding on octopuses and crabs.
You may think you've heard of the Goliath grouper. However, this new species lives in the Pacific Ocean and is biologically different enough from its Atlantic Ocean cousin to be named a new species. For generations it was thought both animals were the same but this information has come to light because of better genetic testing.
Its believed the two species were one and the same eons ago when the continents existed as one land mass and the oceans were joined. However, each species developed separately as Central America divided the waters into the Atlantic and Pacific.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

That's a good one! Now you've made me start wondering. In some areas of the Atlantic, I know it's illegal to remove a grouper from the water! I wonder what laws will be in the Pacific!!!!!
