Angling Fish - by James Rickard

Now is the time to fish!

April 24th 2008 00:51
It finally happened! Mother Nature has cooperated and there have been a few consecutive days of good weather around here. This is a great opportunity to go after those pre-spawn bass!

If you're new to angling, this is a great time to throw a hook into the water because the fish bite on almost anything and your odds of coming away with something are pretty good.

Maybe artificial lures are foreign to you. This is definitely the time to give them a try!

If you live around a Wal-Mart, run down and pick up one of their $1.00 Buzzbaits. Although there are few guarantees when it comes to fishing, I'm willing to bet money that you'll catch something. While you're there, pick up a spinerbait--again for a buck.

You can fish these lures from the bank. Here's what you do--

topwater lures
Lures like these will help you land a lunker!
Instead of casting straight out in front of you, cast parallel to the shore. How far out would depend on the drop off but 10-20 ft. (3-6 m.) would be a safe bet. Make a few casts to that area then move it about ten more feet. (Do the same with your spinnerbait if you have one.) If you don't get anything, it's probably because there are no fish in the area.

Turn to the other side and repeat what you just did. Even if the fish are deep, they'll come up to hit your lures!

When the fishing is easy like it is now, just about any lure will work. Chuggers, poppers, buzzbaits, in short, just about any top water lure will do the trick. Aside from topwaters, I'd go with almost any shallow running lure.

This is a great time to try new tactics, lures, or experiment with new presentations. Fishing is never as easy as it is in the spring!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Louie,

We've been EXTREAMLY lucky--highs in the upper 60's and low 70's with BLUE skies. Do you know how rare that is in Pittsburgh??? *L*

Sage advice James, have you ever tried those with a fly rod? It really augments the action.

I had to get a new fly rod--a nine footer and I just can't get used to it because the other one was only 71/2. I used to like to use chuggers with that one!

Oh yea, big fun James, mine is a 9 ft Browning Waterton VII and I work the snot out of it.

It's help me land many fish in the 15 lb plus range, up to a hen salmon that hit around 30lbs. yeehaw, bring 'em on, it's all good.

Raven,
That's what I like--BIG fish with fly equipment. I mostly know the guy who just do the trout thing and that's why I'm not into it too much--that and the fact that it takes me around 90 minutes to get to good fly waters vs. WALKING down to the river for bass or catfish!

Try the fly rod in the river, night crawler up stream and slow sink drift with the current has worked well for me fishing for german browns, rainbows and cut throats. Lemme know how it works for you James. Warning they hit hard. . .
